FAMILY PRO SE/SELF HELP PROGRAM
The history of the Family Self Help Program began in 1996 when the program first started in our Circuit. Since that time, the Program has become a tremendous success which is reinforced by case management of pro se cases that otherwise might be stagnant, effective and efficient use of court time, and consistency of information provided to the pro se litigants through forms and procedures.
The Family Self Help Program assists individuals maneuvering through the Family Court System. The Program is based on a voice mail system in which individuals call and leave relevant information pertaining to their case. Their file is reviewed by the Pro Se Coordinator and the call is returned within three business days. The individuals are told if they need any additional forms or documents, and they are given a court date. The Pro Se Coordinators, at no time, render legal advice.
The assistance of three student interns from the Paralegal Program at Indian River Community College helped the Pro Se Coordinator in St. Lucie County during the past year, along with providing invaluable experience to the students.
